ORGANIZATION: The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Southern Illinois (EFGSI) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 voluntary health organization serving the southwestern Illinois counties of Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, St. Clair, and Washington. Through its subsidiary office in Mt. Vernon, Illinois it also serves another 27 counties in Greater Southern Illinois to cover almost a third of the state of Illinois.
One out of every 100 people has epilepsy, with 80% of the cases diagnosed in childhood. Epilepsy is a chronic disorder of the central nervous system characterized by seizures. Epilepsy is not a disease, and therefore, there is no "cure" for epilepsy. Even though there is no cure for epilepsy, in many cases, complete control of seizures can be brought about. EFGSI is dedicated to the welfare of people with epilepsy in helping individuals and their families live well with epilepsy.
EFGSI offers a full range of services to help families deal with the many issues of this disorder. The services include case management, professional and public education, support groups, information newsletter, advocacy, residential services, a summer camp program, and a support network.
EFGSI has a Professional Advisory Board that advises on needed services. St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis provides in kind medical support staff for our summer camp. In addition, the Board of Directors is committed to promoting the mission of EFGSI in the community. EFGSI collaborates with many other social service organizations in the community.
